In our kitchen we have a tape player. In our house we only have one tape – the soundtrack to The Little Mermaid. On a not entirely unrelated note, fandubs of Disney songs are a resource of amazingness I wasn’t previously aware of. That’s all changed now, though, and I have spent the past while enjoying various translations of ‘Kiss the Girl’ in one browser window, while doing some research on the Austrian hotness that is Christoph Waltz in the other. Disney and Nazis. Nice.

It’s hard to pick a favourite but how can you fail to be charmed by a Icelandic man singing as a crab singing in a reggae style?

I thought I would never watch Inglourious Basterds because of the extra ‘u’ and Brad Pitt’s bizarre overacting in the trailer (like I am determined never to watch Sweeney Todd. Sometimes I feel like the only girl in the world who neither finds Johnny Depp attractive nor a particularly amazing actor), but then I realised that he’s not in it much and instead there are lots of attractive German men in it (Michael Fassbender is half German, also counts). So now I’m watching it with a hangover and will rate it solely on the mens. Currently considering watching it on mute.

I am at that stage in my life where a new Stephen Poliakoff film is far more exciting than any night out. Actually, I don’t think there’s ever been a stage when the opposite was true, despite Friends & Crocodiles through to Capturing Mary having been a series of slight to not-so-slight disappointments.

My hopes are once again up for a dashing with Glorious 39. I think it looks rather pleasing (and certainly very pretty), and I’m going to ignore any rumblings to the contrary.

I’ll allow that it does look a bit ludicrous.

Fiver’s vision of blood over the fields, and the weird bit with with the rabbits heads coming down the warren network and then combining in a mass of red eyes and teeth? Yeah.

I know. Me too.

As a child I found Watership Down genuinely scary, and it made me cry (Bigwig in a trap… Hazel trying to bite him loose), but I still watched it more often than The Secret of Nimh. My parents even bought me the VHS and The Watership Down Film Picture Book, for more convenient terror.

If children are going to be slightly terrified, it should be by a film which has life and death and violence, and ‘Bright Eyes’ and dark visuals and a trickster folk hero called El-Ahrairah. And rabbits.

Go watch it now. Even if you have to do so through your fingers.

Don’t speak Greek? That’s cool, me neither. BUT I do know the meaning of the above, and I also know it’s gonna come in real useful next time I visit Greece… So, not so long ago my boyfriend and I were making Mousaka. He told me there was a film called ‘Attack of the Giant Mousaka’. I told him to be quiet and silently wondered whether he’d lost the plot slightly. He told me he’d bet me dinner at a restaurant that he was not lying. And what do you know? HE WON! WTF?!? Ah yes, of course! ‘I epithesi tou gigantiaiou mousaka’ translates as ‘Attack of the giant mousaka’. OBVIOUSLY.

The plot summary for this film (courtesy of imdb) is: ‘Around the year 2000, a terrible occurence shocks the city of Athens: a huge piece of moussaka appears on the city streets, spreading panic and death. Everyone keeps wondering: why, where, how, for what reason? But no one can give an answer…’

Probably because no one has EVER seen the film (clearly including the literary sweetheart that wrote that imdb entry). Until now that is. I’m going to watch this whilst eating mousaka. Scary. It’ll be just like eating honey and watching Candyman. Except probably more frightening.

Lets watch an extract. Sorry if you don’t speak French – for some baffling reason I could only find the film with French subtitles, which actually may explain why my French boyfriend is the only person I know that has ever heard of this film. Hmmm, anyway…
